  1. This week I have learned about many different types of hardware used in litigation, including, elmos, VGA/HDMI, Hard disk drive, USB sticks, Apricot, smartphone scanning to PDF, and video adapters for tablets and laptops. Also, I was introduced to Prezi and Powtoons, two useful programs for presentations. Outline view in Microsoft Word will be very useful in saving time when editing documents.

  2. This week I have learned several different things. First, I learned a lot of information about the different hardware/media available from watching the YouTube videos. The VGA/HDMI video was very informative. I had no idea the differences between the cables and ports. I learned if I’m going to spend the money I should just purchase the DisplayPort 1.3.
I thought the hard drive video was the best. I had only a basic understanding of how any of that worked. The in-depth explanation was fascinating. I watched it three times just to make sure I understood the concepts. While I realized that the layers of data had to be small; I did not understand they were atom-sized small. I knew 1’s and 0’s; I did not know North and South orientation. Each of the videos were worth the watch.
The Outline view video was a helpful refresher its use and purpose.
The best and most surprising was the website I created on Google. I had no idea it was so easy, so accessible.

    1. Tammy - if you ever are elected to go into court with an attorney you may be expected to be sure you have all the correct connection cables from the I.T. department so that you can connect up the laptop to the projector. Some projectors do not have HDMI connections but most have the VGA connections.

  3. This week I have learned many different things. I finally know how to use an ELMO camera now whenever I need to use it to present an item in front of a class. I also learned all the cable names that I see that go into my computers and monitors and what each cable does for me. Its also nice to finally know parts of the hard drive and know what each part does and how everything functions together.
The USB stick section was very helpful due to the fact that I have so many USB drives laying around and do not know what to do with.
The video on the Turbo Scan app for smartphones was very interesting because I did not know that app existed.
I was also introduced to POWTOON which I have never heard of.

    1. The turbo scan app for smartphones is becoming a very important way to scan documents in court and off site - we use to have to take with us a scanner into court or to a client's site to scan in paper documents.

  4. I have learned how to connect and navigate ELMO. I also learned more about the VGA/HDMI hard drives. I have used HDMI a time or two but didn't really know much about it. My understanding is a little better. Plus I have a feeling that I will be using more of the HDMI cables. Surprising though, I haven't heard of the Display Port 1.2/1.3 until now. It sounds like it is the way to go. As far as the USB goes, luckily I haven't ran across not being able to use mine. It is good to know, however, what to do incase I should ever get that error message. Video Adapters for tablets, laptops, tc I found interesting. I knew how to sync my phone, laptop, and printer. I didn't know that we could sync to the tv. The word tutorial was a great refresher. The class I took on it, was years ago and was on an older version of Word. What I found most interesting it the turbo scan app that we can download on our smart phone. I feel that will grow as technology grows. It is easy, simple, and very convenient. Most of us always have a cell phone on use these days.

  5. Christiana VGA and HDMI are not hard drives - these are special cable connections for video input and output for a computer to either a monitor or to a projector.

I have learned a variety of new things this week. The ELMO camera is simply amazing tool for presentations etc.
The Outline View I learned I put to use in a document for work. That will be a very useful tool. Not one of my co-workers have used it yet. I would like to explore Powtoon in a little more detail. I have never heard of it.

  8. In class Wednesday January 20, 2016, I learned that there's more to paralegal than paper work. I did not know about the Elmo Document camera and all the unique things it can do. It takes pictures, it lighten and darken documents, it zooms in and out so the document is readable and it can pause so you can adjust the lens or rotate the machine.
I learned about the VGA/HDMI plugs and how they can display port DVI very fast. I learned some o the drawback og the HDMI 1.4. like It doesn't including a licking mechanism, it is limited to 4k at 30Hz, It doesn't have a wide 2109 aspect ratios, or no multiple streams. The HDMI 20. only has one draw back and that it does not include a locking mechanism.
There are small HDMIs the micro, mini, mini display port. The micro looks like the one I use for my phone.

I learned a little about hard drives one size is 2 1|2 and 31/2 they have arm that are part of a Head stack and 300,000 words in a inch of radius. They have a coil that hidden under the magnet Rotor. they talked about the Read Element that reads the data off the disk and the Transducer device that converts one type of energy to another. The USB Stick video about how you reformat or Re-Install your USB drive if it doesn't work.

On one of the videos I learned that I can Turbo scan a document with my phone by downloading the app.
I also learned how to connect my telephone to the Television using certain app.

  9. Wow, there was an awful lot of stuff to learn about this week! I thing what I learned the most about was Prezi. Until this class I had never heard of this program and found it very interesting what the capabilities are that can be done within it. I also learned a great deal about Turbo Scan which is an app that I can see myself getting a great deal of use out of at home and work. All you have to do is download the app, take a picture, and it will convert the picture to a pdf and format it and it is read to send to whomever the recipient may be. If you are on the go and need a pdf of a document quickly, this is an awesome way to get the task done quickly without a copier or scanner required!

I have learned many new helpful tools and websites. Prezi and Powtoon seem to be really nice presentation websites and I'm excited to use them. The YouTube videos I have watched were extremely educational. I learned about different cord connections such as VGA and HDMI which would be helpful to know when hooking up projectors an laptops. Also learning about OneNote and Audacity and using these programs will be exciting and helpful in staying organized and recording different documents or voice recordings. I am eager to learn more as the weeks come.

  11. The one thing I really found interesting was the video on video adapters for tablets and laptops. I never new how to sync all those electronics together until that video. I also liked the ELMO video as well. I really enjoy reading the chapters using prezi, it makes it much easier. I attempted to make a powtoon presentation a few times but have not come up with anything to save yet. Hopefully the more I use powtoons the better I will get at using the app.

  13. I have some familiarity with most of the linked information. The things that I did learn about were the Elmos and the PDF app for iPhones. The Elmos was interesting. I've never heard of this before. It seems to be the same concept as a projector, only much more sophisticated. It is a very useful tool that makes presentations more effective.
I recognized the VGA/HDMI, USB Sticks, and video adapters. What I didn't know is that different cables are made for different speeds. I am familiar with some numbers on TVs or electronics that equate to clarity, but I'm not real knowledgeable on how that all works.
I am most impressed with the PDF app for iPhones. I will be downloading that app and using it not only for this class, but possibly in my job as well.
I was not aware of powtoons or pezi. I hope I will be able to understand it and effectively use it when necessary. There was certainly a lot of information to cover this week.

  14. Session 2 January 27
This week was a time consuming week spent researching and learning two presentation software programs and then creating presentations. The Powtoons software was fun once I got past the mental block of what to present. Actually, I think that was the hardest part for both programs, deciding on presentation information.
The PowerPoint/snipping stills from a video was right up my alley. I enjoyed searching for and getting the exact right picture. Since we’re creating clickable outlines every week, I will have that skill down.
I also added to my website/research paper project. I think I will try creating that calendar mentioned in Chapter 1 just to keep track of all the writings that must be submitted every week. 

  15. This week I learned alot of new things about technology. I did not know much about many of the things we covered this week. I am interested to learn more about Prezi and Powtoons. The video about USB's was very interesting to me, I only wish I could have discovered the video sooner. Last semester, I lost all of my documents on my USB and I did not know what to do; it was definitely not a good experience. I am looking forward about learning about different types of technology. I have learned a lot already and it is only week one! I think this class will teach me things that will be very relevant and useful in the law office.

  16. This week I have learned a variety of things that I knew, and some that I did not know. I have never operated an ELMO before and the YouTube instructional video brought some light on how to connect the camera, projector, and computer. As well as the different functions of the buttons. I also have never heard of turbo scan. I find it amazing that your phone can turn a document into a pdf format to be sent in e-mail or wherever need be. It makes it easier to upload documents and to keep track of them. I did know how to set up my phone and tablet to my television, but I did not know how to set up my laptop. I know can play videos or music on my television instead of the soft sound that my laptop plays.

  17. I always said I would never blog, but in the ever-changing world of technology, I'm doing it for this class. I look forward to preparing the presentations on Prezi and Powtoons as well as to utilize my newly-learned skills at a new law office. L. Haider

  18. Wow. I think I'm a little scared. There is SO much information and so much to do. I'm amazed at all the different kinds of software out there. I guess that's what google is for. When we need to use technology to enhance, create, edit, or a host of other things....we can get all the answers we need by looking up the information. All the different software from picture enhancing such as Gigipans, to software such as Gomplayer needed to view videos on a computer, to Open Office which is utilized in foreign countries....and that's not even the tip of the iceberg, and this is just the videos, I haven't read the chapters yet. So much to learn.

  19. I've learned quite a bit this week!!!! I think I spent way too much time looking at all the panoramas but that was very interesting. Learning about the Powtoons and Prezi has been fun. That is way better, in my opinion, than PowerPoint.

  20. I found chapter 2 of the reading very informative. I also liked doing the clickable table of contents this week. I am still practicing the prezi and powtoon presentations but I think after working with the software I should get better at making presentations. I too agree that there is a lot to do and so much information to learn but so far I have been able to get it done.

  21. There was a lot to take in this week. At the same time, I learned alot. I have never heard of Prezi or Powtoon until this class. I did find it interesting to do the Powtoon. That was fun. The Prezi program wasn't an attention getter for me; however, I haven't done much with it. PowerPoint I was more familiar with, but still have a lot to learn about.

  22. Session 2 proved to be quite informative and definitely kept me busy with learning new forms of presentations. It was very interesting to learn all of the ways technology is advancing in the law office. I also learned new things in the world of ethics and technology.

  24. Session 3 February 3
Chapter three had a lot of definitions and topics. Consequently, it took a long time to outline. It was very informative. I wasn’t aware of all the distinct differences. Now I know why my kids repeatedly corrected me when I referred to notepads, laptops and notebooks interchangeably. They are not.
The heat issues video was interesting, eating the bologna not so much haha.
I’m glad that you have us re-using all the different software packages. It helps keep it fresh in my mind. I’m really enjoying PowerPoint the best. I have to admit the screen snipping from a video last week was great.
I learned QuickParts last semester in class. However, listening to your explanation in the audio lecture helped to bring home how valuable it is for a paralegal. Turning boilerplate language into a QuickPart will be a great time-saver.

  25. Session 3-I found chapter 3 and 4 interested and very informative. The best part that I like was the Quick Parts/Building Blocks. I could use that daily at my current job. I really like how you have us do it instead of just watching the videos. It helps stick.

  26. Chapter 3 in my opinion was very informative. I work with computes daily and I still find new things that I haven't utilized. I enjoyed the video on how a CPU can warm up very quickly!!! Chapter 4 was loaded with information with the Cloud and the Internet. A lot of this information is useful at my job.

    ReplyDelete
  27. I keep finding myself going back to the research paper and tweaking it. Looking for more information to add and then finding where it fits. I started the internet resources spreadsheet. I am very glad I did that. It has been so helpful keeping track of information. I saved a link to a webpage that listed 3 helpful macros for the paralegal:
    http://www.pcworld.com/article/2952126/software-productivity/word-macros-three-examples-to-automate-your-documents.html#tk.nl_today

Surprisingly, I really enjoyed chapter 4. I needed that picture in my head of how the internet works. I know, I could have googled it at any point to discover this but, for some reason, that never dawned on me. After, reading the chapter, I googled it a lot.
Chapter 5 was not as interesting as chapter 4. It did get me thinking about the more rural areas and how they will file their documents. One of my teachers last semester told us about her dealings with a more rural area. They still had to pull out the plat book to get the legal description of property. There was just no money for a computer.

  28. I really enjoyed doing the outline for Chapters 1 & 2. I have only begun to do chapters 3&4. There is so much information in these chapters it will be hard to contain it to one page. The information is interesting but a bit technical. I will need to go over the info a few times to fully understand it. I also found the CPU video entertaining. I was not aware that the CPU got so hot.

    ReplyDelete
  29. Session 3 was full of great computer basics on what to know in the Law Office. I feel more competent in using Quick Parts. The video on the CPU heat was really interesting, too.

  30. Session 4 was full of useful information and to retain the information will take some time. The outlines for chapter 3&4 were hard to do. Deciding which information to put in the outline was quite difficult. I found the hotdocs lecture very informative. I hope to use this software in the near future. I also liked the pacer video which I have since registered for the website. My research paper is coming along albeit at a slow pace.

    ReplyDelete
  31. Creating the spreadsheet was not a problem. I had some on-hand. The taxonomy took a bit. I wanted to make sure I understood exactly what it was I needed to do. I googled a few things and realized I really just needed to jump right in. I made sure I found 15 items to track. I don’t believe I had the same 15 as Mr. Kindt though.
Oh, and Mr. Kindt, in regards to your post on my first blog, I found a very good video for this weeks assignment for connecting the laptop to the projector. This one showed me all the cords 
Chapters 7 and 8 were simple yet informative refreshers. I am glad that this class builds upon my previous computer classes. It commits the information better to my memory.

    ReplyDelete
  32. Session 4. I learned a lot in this session. I think the hotdocs what I liked that most. I believe I will use it a ton. The Macro was good to know too. It will help me at home and at work!

    ReplyDelete
  33. I've used Word for years, but never knew how to make a clickable table, which is a very cool feature. I also have never used macros. It has always seemed like way more work to take the time to make a macro than just enter the information. I do like using the macro to make labels

    ReplyDelete
  34. Great information in session 4. HotDocs and Macros will be added to my repertoire of useful knowledge.

    ReplyDelete
  35. Spreadsheets....what a nightmare for me. I'm fortunate my job does not require any type of in depth spreadsheet or use of Access. I can navigate excel somewhat, but struggle with Access. If I ever find myself in the job interview position again, I will have to ask if Access is used. I would not accept a job position in a firm that uses Access on any type of regular basis.

    ReplyDelete
  36. I have used Excel and Access in previous jobs. The excel comes very easy to me; however, Access was a little rough. Chapters 7 and 8 had great refresher information for me and it is good to know that I have knowledge that can be used in my future endeavors in a law office.

    ReplyDelete
  37. Not a big fan of excel and access but I really don't have a lot of experience with them. I have taken word classes but have not taken any that involve excel or access. I liked watching the video and trying to relate the info to a real case.

    ReplyDelete
  38. Sessions 6 & 7
I always enjoy working in Access and Excel. I have a BS in accounting so this is where I feel most comfortable, data and numbers. I thought the AbacusLaw tutorials were a helpful way to introduce us to the capabilities of the software and the PowerPoint helped to remember it. However, when it comes to computers and their applications, I am a hands-on learner. I was happy to learn about ILOTA. Its nice to know the legal community steps up in that manner.
I thought the photo editing in this session was just overall very good. I had no idea how it was done, so actually performing it was good experience to put things in perspective. The reading for this took a while. The article is dated in some areas yet had useful information that is still relevant.

    ReplyDelete
  39. I do believe that I am finally getting the hang of Excel and Access. I like doing the projects in Session 6. The IOLTA video contained a lot of information and I found it a little hard to follow. I found the videos on Abacus Law interesting. The research paper is coming along albeit slowly.

    ReplyDelete
  40. Session 6: AbacusLaw and IOLTA are very interesting. I learned a lot watching the videos and making the tutorial. Chapter 9's information about software in a law firm was very enlightening.

    ReplyDelete
  41. Session 5 I hadn't really done anything with access like I have with word or excel so I really liked that. Plus I make a lot of table like documents and that is something I would def. like to play around with more to see what else it can do.

    ReplyDelete
  42. For starters let me start of by saying boy am I glad we only had to outline one chapter this week. That really helped with the workload. I found the Pixlr videos interesting and very useful with editing images. Starting to put my research paper together but I still need some web info, which I will look for this weekend.

  45. I liked the video on how to remove a digital image from a photo. I thought that was really neat. Still working towards finishing the research project. I am starting to see some of the information in the book pop up in other classes. I like how all of the classes come together and show how things are applied.

    ReplyDelete
  46. I find it extremely interesting all of the technology that is used in the law office. I think the legal information on digital imaging requirements and alterations will come in very handy for the future of the law.

  47. I really enjoyed creating the timeline. There were two ways to insert a picture into the timeline. I figured out how to insert it into the text box on the time line; it took me a minute to figure out how to insert the picture in to the timeline.

  48. Melissa,
I did those assignments last night at work. They weren't that rough. I need to get your phone number. They were not on my original homework assignments that I printed out at spring break, so thank you!!!!
The attorney assignments were great practice.

  50. I completed my oral presentation of my paper this week. I used PowerPoint and recorded a narration. While it wasn't one of my more colorful presentations, I was very happy with how it turned out. It was the first time I recorded with PowerPoint, I am surprised at how easy it actually is.

  51. Session 12 for some reason felt like it took forever to do. Maybe it's because we are so close to the end. I found the robotic unit video interesting and I always enjoy working the Gigapan. I found chapter 13 to be on of the more interesting chapters.
